Dear all crews

For the time being, in preparation for its publication,

I want to focus on the writing of my book,

so I will be taking a break from this blog.

When commencing on this voyage, I will again call out to you.

Together let's go on an adventure!

Thank you for being with me so far.

I'm not perfect.

Maybe I sometimes say the wrong thing.

But I write the true stories that I learn from my everyday experience.

And I'd like to organize them step by step.

I'd like to continue this until I can see what the most important thing is.

These words are a precious treasure to me.

And my readers and my loved ones are irreplaceable gifts for me.

Every week at our openings at Ouchi Gallery, we looked forward to seeing him. Jacek Maczynski, an artist from Poland, sadly passed away on the twenty-first of October in his parents’ home. Up until that day he was still active online. He had posted something on Japan, for us, “Nihon,” our motherland. I realized how much he must have loved Japan. Of course, with time we are all fated to pass away. But for me, the fact that my life, too, will come to an end is something I am prone to forget.

That people die, this reality, I don’t believe it to be just a matter of time, how fast or slow. Rather, I believe the true value of life lies in how one spends that precious time: to what extent they allow themselves to be moved, and what they are able to leave behind. I believe Jacek brought much love to this home, “Ouchi,” a place where many people come and can feel moved, and our lives can have significance. It's from here I believe we must continue to endeavor with love.

The owner of the room, a single mother with a four-year-old daughter, was on a trip, so Miss E said she would be coming in each day to feed her cat. There were two reasons I took a sleeping bag from Miss E’s room to spend the night here. First, Miss E was emotionally unstable, so I wanted to put some distance between us. Second, and the larger reason I came to Berlin, I was looking for a space to potentially make into a gallery.

Everything was just as it was the day before: the nursery, the bathroom, the living room, even the sleeping bag I'd brought and put on the bed. Yesterday, when I had moved from Miss E's two-story apartment to her friend's flat, the moment I unlocked the door two cats dashed out, and the foyer looked just like it had been broken into, things scattered about. It seemed for a second like it might have been the doing of a young and a little sketchy landlord, but I thought that was just Berlin.

(I knew he was on tour in Germany and had come to Berlin...)

The staff told me he wanted to introduce me to a well known jazz bassist who is active around New York and had stopped by Berlin on his tour of Germany. To my surprise, it was someone I had met before, Mister U. The staff called him around the counter. (As it turned out, the staff is the owner of this club, and he reminds me of the ex-owner of the Jazz Club Smalls as he was humming andjovial. Later, the group started an instrumental performance. If I remember correctly, I think after rotating performers, Blue Monk started playing.

At one point, when the group members were changing, the staff member from earlier came up to me and asked, “Can you sing?”

I replied, “I came here from New York. I just want to relax and listen to the performance.”

And just then, I happened to recognize someone: a well-known jazz bassist active around New York, Mister U. I knew he was on tour in Germany and had come to Berlin...

Young jazz musicians, playing piano, bass, drum, trumpet and saxophone were in the middle of a jam session, and the place, without air conditioning, reached the peak of steaming heat. The German singer, in her late 40s, sang scat at a medium tempo.

My first impression of this Berlin jazz club was surprise. Fairly orthodox bepop still had mainstream popularity. It reminded me of when that same nostalgic, old-fashioned style swept through New York in the 90s. I was fond of it...

(It had been a strange night...)

The jazz club was overflowing with heat and people packed to the door.

Just as we had pushed our way through the waves of people, one of the German staff member came up to us and asked me, “Are you a jazz singer?”

I’m not sure why he asked this, but it seems like every jazz place I go, I always get that same question.

Then, pointing right below the full house banner, near the front of the stage, Miss E and I were automatically placed in the only open seats in the house...

The Turkish antique store Miss E told me about (which was really just full of a cast-off item; it wasn't real antique store, and more of a collection for the things left behind in the homes of elderly who past without relatives)

It was the day after Miss E and I went around to some jazz clubs, and I was looking for a bandoneon.
