Young jazz musicians, playing piano, bass, drum, trumpet and saxophone were in the middle of a jam session, and the place, without air conditioning, reached the peak of steaming heat. The German singer, in her late 40s, sang scat at a medium tempo.

My first impression of this Berlin jazz club was surprise. Fairly orthodox bepop still had mainstream popularity. It reminded me of when that same nostalgic, old-fashioned style swept through New York in the 90s. I was fond of it...
